Sotomayor and the rest of the court heard a case this week revolving around a firm that purchases consumer debt for pennies on the dollar and then tries to recover payments from people in bankruptcy -- even though it is barred by state laws from doing so.

Prosecutors strike deal in repossession that went horribly wrong

The story of a woman's death earlier this year was shocking. The 35-year-old was killed when a man trying to repossess her vehicle ran her off of the road. Her SUV slammed into a tree as she was being chased by the man who was driving a tow truck.
