Things to keep in mind when buying a used car

On Behalf of Bensley Law Offices, LLC | May 19, 2022 | Dealer Fraud |

Buying a car can be an exciting experience, especially if you are a first-time buyer. However, if the vehicle in question is a used car, you might have a number of questions to ask during the purchase process. After all, you want value for your hard-earned.

Of course, unless you are buying a car from a trusted family or friend, it is never easy telling what is beneath that hood. Fortunately, there are things you can look out for to ensure that you do not end up with a lemon. Here are some of them:

The condition of the car

Once you have identified a car that interests you, it is important that you check out vital details to ensure that you get value for your money. Here are some of the car aspects that you inspect with regards to the car’s condition before making a decision:

  • The car’s interior: Check out its upholstery to ensure it is in good shape. If the car has electronic items like a monitor or a music system, find out if they are properly functioning.
  • The car’s engine: It is important that you carry out a thorough inspection of its engine. Look out for any corrosion, leaks, transmission fluid and cracked tubes.
  • The car’s registration: You want to ensure that you are buying the car from a genuine owner. And this is where the vehicle’s registration certificate comes in. The certificate should bear the owner’s particulars and the car’s specs, such as engine and chassis number.
  • The car’s insurance: When buying a used car, the existing insurance will need to be transferred to your name. If the seller does not facilitate this, it is your responsibility to effect the transfer. This will save you from a legal headache if the car is involved in an accident or unfortunate event while its insurance bears someone else’s name.

Buying a car is a considerable investment. Find out how to protect your rights and interests while purchasing a used car.
