Common auto-dealership scams to watch out for in Pennsylvania

On Behalf of Bensley Law Offices, LLC | Jan 22, 2026 | Dealer Fraud |

To many, buying a new car is a major achievement that serves as a milestone. It’s an exciting prospect, though one that requires significant financial investment. While many auto dealerships in Pennsylvania operate lawfully, some may take advantage of customers eager to purchase a new vehicle.

What are the most prominent auto-dealership scams?

There are many scams that dealerships and car salesmen might attempt to use on unsuspecting customers. By recognizing these scams and knowing how they work, identifying the warning signs will be significantly easier. Common auto-dealership scams in Pennsylvania include:

  • Bait-and-switch advertising: Dealers might advertise a vehicle at an affordable price to draw in customers, only to claim it is unavailable when they arrive and pressure potential buyers into purchasing other vehicles at much higher prices.
  • Hidden fees: Some dealers might add unnecessary fees, add-ons and service charges to the final sale price without informing the buyer. Examples of hidden fees include extended warranties or service plans not discussed with the buyer.
  • VIN cloning: Fraudulent dealers might steal a vehicle and replace its vehicle identification number (VIN) with one from a legitimately owned car of the same make and model. This makes it so there are two vehicles with the same VIN, making it much more difficult for buyers to identify that the car they wish to purchase is stolen.

It is essential to be aware of the most prominent auto-dealership scams. However, it is equally important to know what steps you can take to avoid falling for them.

The importance of avoiding auto-dealership scams

Be sure to read contracts thoroughly and confirm that they are final before signing them. Similarly, research Pennsylvania dealers to determine whether or not they are trustworthy, and always try to negotiate with them – especially when one offers you an unfair deal.

By remaining vigilant and staying informed, you can identify when a dealer is attempting to scam you or give you an unfair deal. By staying on top of potential scammers, you can enjoy the excitement of buying a new vehicle without having to worry about trickery or swindling.
