How car dealers mislead buyers on add-ons

On Behalf of Bensley Law Offices, LLC | Sep 22, 2025 | Consumer Protection |

Buying a car should feel exciting. For many in Philadelphia, it turns into stress and regret. Hidden fees, surprise charges and confusing contracts leave buyers paying much more than expected. One major cause is the addition of products and extended warranties.

Here’s how dealerships mislead buyers—and how you can stay protected.

Add-ons you didn’t ask for

Dealerships often include extras like VIN etching, tire protection or paint sealants. Salespeople may not explain that these products are optional. They pre-fill them on contracts or hide them in financing documents.

Many buyers only notice the extras after checking paperwork at home. For example, a car dealer may include a $500 appearance package in the contract without discussion. That extra cost increases the loan balance and adds more interest.

Warranty confusion and pressure tactics

Extended warranties create even more problems. Dealers often claim lenders require warranties for financing or say buyers need them for protection. In reality, buyers choose whether to purchase them.

There are car owners who report that salespeople rushed them through paperwork. Many felt pressured to sign without knowing what the warranty covers. Some plans include strict limits, high deductibles or overlap with the manufacturer’s coverage.

Lasting financial headaches

The damage doesn’t stop at signing. Extra products raise the loan amount and monthly payments. Buyers end up paying more interest over the life of the loan.

Canceling a warranty or add-on is not always easy. Some dealerships delay the process, offer partial refunds or refuse to cooperate.

Pennsylvania law bans unfair or deceptive sales tactics. Still, enforcement is uneven. Many buyers must handle disputes on their own.

Steps to protect yourself

Before you sign, ask for an itemized list of all costs. Review each charge carefully. If something feels wrong, walk away.

If you feel a dealership misled you, consider speaking with an attorney. They may be able to explain your rights under Pennsylvania law and guide you toward options for a refund or other remedy.

Knowing your rights and spotting red flags can save you thousands. It can also give you peace of mind when buying your next car.
