How to identify hidden frame damage when purchasing a used car

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2025 | Dealer Fraud

Purchasing a used car can be an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience. Regardless of a vehicle’s outward appearance, you can’t be totally sure about its history.

One of the most critical concerns when buying a used car is hidden frame damage. Hidden frame damage can undermine a vehicle’s sturdiness and make it unsafe to drive. If you’re shopping for a used car at a Philadelphia auto dealership, knowing how to spot hidden frame damage can help to save you from costly repairs and potential safety hazards.

What is frame damage

The frame of a car supports all other components, including the engine, suspension and body. Frame damage occurs when a vehicle has been involved in a collision or severe impact. Some dealerships may not disclose this damage, and some repairs may be designed to mask the issue rather than fix it.

Signs of hidden frame damage

One obvious indication of frame damage is weird gaps between the body panels of a used vehicle. Make sure you inspect its doors, hood and trunk for misaligned gaps that a sturdy vehicle shouldn’t have. Uneven spacing or difficulty in closing these components can indicate that the frame has been bent or improperly repaired.

You should also look under the vehicle for any signs of recent welding, especially in areas near the frame. If you notice uneven or excessive welding, this could be a sign that the car has undergone structural repairs.

You can also request to take the car for a test drive before making the final payment. This way, you can observe its alignment when it’s in motion. Suppose the vehicle pulls to one side even when the steering wheel is straight. In that case, you might be looking at a vehicle with frame damage that’s affecting its alignment.

Don’t forget to check for uneven wear patterns on the vehicle’s tires. Excessive wear on one side of the tires can indicate misalignment due to a damaged frame. Additionally, suppose the vehicle appears to be sitting unevenly or has difficulty absorbing road bumps. In that case, the frame may be damaged, affecting the suspension system.

With all of this said, even the savviest buyers may find themselves to be targets of fraudulent practices. Do you believe that a Philadelphia auto dealership has attempted to defraud you by selling you a used vehicle with hidden frame damage? If so, you’ll want to strongly consider seeking hands-on legal guidance to learn about your legal options.
