Beware of these 4 deceptive practices by auto dealers

On Behalf of Bensley Law Offices, LLC | Apr 24, 2023 | Dealer Fraud |

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of picking out your dream ride when shopping for a car. However, you must be careful before making a purchase. Not all auto dealers are trustworthy or have your best interests at heart.

Some auto dealers may engage in fraudulent or deceptive practices to convince you to buy a vehicle, knowing full well the troubles that lie ahead. Therefore, it helps to be wary of and avoid these common deceptive practices if you are considering buying a car.

1. Financing tricks

Auto dealers may try to deceive you when it comes to financing. For example, they might offer you a low-interest rate but then add additional fees to compensate for the difference. Alternatively, they may convince you to agree to unfavorable terms by claiming that your credit score is too low to qualify for low-interest financing.

2. Bait and switch

The bait-and-switch tactic is as old as the hills. It involves advertising a low price to attract customers but claiming that the car has already been sold when the customer arrives. The dealer then tries to sell you a more expensive vehicle instead.

3. Misrepresenting a car’s condition

Another common tactic is for auto dealers to misrepresent a car’s condition. For example, they might claim that a vehicle has never been in an accident when it has, or that it has low mileage when the odometer has been tampered with.

4. Pressure tactics

Some auto dealers may use high-pressure tactics to get you to make a purchase quickly. For example, they might tell you that the car will only be available at the advertised price for a limited time or that other buyers are interested in the vehicle.

Protect your interests when it’s time to buy a car

Always do your research, ask questions and carefully read any documents before signing. By being vigilant, you can avoid falling victim to these tactics and get a fair deal on your next car purchase. If you’ve been defrauded or deceived by an auto dealer, seek legal guidance to understand the options for mitigating or recouping your losses.
