Prosecutors strike deal in repossession that went horribly wrong

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2016 | Consumer Protection

The story of a woman’s death earlier this year was shocking. The 35-year-old was killed when a man trying to repossess her vehicle ran her off of the road. Her SUV slammed into a tree as she was being chased by the man who was driving a tow truck.

The man was subsequently charged with manslaughter. However, it now appears likely that he has reached a plea deal with prosecutors, his criminal defense attorney said recently.

The woman left behind two young daughters and a husband, according to news reports.

A veteran police officer in Pleasant Grove, Utah, where the tragedy occurred, said he had “never seen a possession agent be this aggressive.”

The woman had moved with her family from Florida to Utah to care for her aging parents. The transition had apparently caused the young family some financial difficulties and they had fallen behind on payments for the Lincoln Navigator, according to a report.

When the repossession agent showed up late one night to repossess the vehicle, the woman drove off. He followed at high speed “in very close pursuit,” court documents stated.

When he tried to pin her vehicle against a curb, the SUV went up and over the curb and slammed full-speed into a tree. She was dead on the spot.

Few repossessions go so horribly wrong, of course.
