Today, and every day, it is appropriate to give thanks to the men and women who have served this nation in the armed services. And to give thanks to their families as well. Their service and sacrifices are in many ways beyond our comprehension.
During most of my lifetime our armed services have been entirely voluntary. For me at least, that makes their service and sacrifices that much more honorable and deserving of our praise and gratitude.
I never served in the military. I regret that. My father served in the U.S. Navy, and tells stories of his service often. I can tell very well how it helped shape the fine man that he is, and has provided a quiet sense of pride.
I guess I have neither the experience nor wisdom to find exactly the right words to express my thanks and to bless our servicepeople and their families.
I hope the knowledge that I and many others keep them all in our prayers and appreciate their service every day in so many ways brings them some peace or warmth especially through the difficult times.
